Object study Dome-top trunk · detail record

Field note 01

The story comes first.

Following the names inside a late-19th-century dome-top trunk

Embossed metal, oak slats, old lithographs, a partial patent date, and a chorus of names lead from the trunk itself toward Auburn, New York. The trail is promising. It is not yet proof.

Follow the evidence
01

Look closely

Marks, materials, repairs, construction, and condition form the first record.

02

Follow carefully

Directories, labels, names, and comparable objects can suggest a path without proving it.

03

Record honestly

Documented facts stay distinct from probable conclusions, working theories, and unknowns.
